Employees of Wheeling Hospital, Continuous Care Center Contribute Again to Komen Foundation: Community Also Helps the Cause

July 23, 2010

WHEELING, W.Va. – Employees of Wheeling Hospital and its Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center (CCC), as well as members of the community, have again stepped up to raise funds to fight breast cancer research.

Through the hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Care Center, a check totaling more than $1,500 is being added to nearly $6,000 already committed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation in the past year.

“I am continually impressed by the dedication shown by Wheeling Hospital and CCC employees to the Komen Foundation’s efforts in fighting breast cancer,” said Deb Radosevich, RN, coordinator of the Comprehensive Breast Care Center. “In addition, our patients, visitors and business community every year wholeheartedly welcome the opportunity to participate in our fundraisers with wonderful contributions.”

In March, a check for nearly $6,000, representing the funds raised during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the fall was presented to Komen representatives. Those funds were generated through sales of raffle tickets for gift baskets. All of the basket items were donated, some by various hospital departments/floors and others by community members and area businesses.

The latest check for $1,500 was generated during events held in the spring. Included was an Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Wheeling Hospital Cancer Committee.

Much of the latest proceeds came from CCC events, coordinated by Mary Brown, RN. She helped organize fundraisers such as a basket raffle; a pink bake sale with prizes awarded for the most unique baked goods; and a pink T-shirt day.

“I could not have done this without teamwork, the support of my colleagues and all the wonderful people who made it happen,” Brown said. “Items were donated by our staff, friends and some of the residents’ family members.”

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.

Earlier this year the Wheeling Hospital Comprehensive Breast Care Center received its fourth grant – this one for $27,800 – from the West Virginia affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The funds will be used for various breast cancer-related programs, including the Breast Health Basics Project, mammogram screenings, Bosom Buddies and the Lymphedema Management Program at the hospital’s Hand Center.
