Cardiac Care

Wheeling Hospital’s commitment to excellence in cardiac care has been recognized by being named as only the 14th U.S. hospital to become an accredited Mission: Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Center for its treatment of the most severe type of heart attack. The accreditation was jointly granted by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC).

In addition, as part the accreditation process, Wheeling Hospital’s status as the region’s only Certified Chest Pain Center with PCI was renewed for another three years by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). PCI stands for percutaneous cardiac intervention – the use of balloon angioplasty and stents.

Wheeling Hospital combines the latest science with a strong commitment to patient care. This leads to quick and effective action to save lives, from the Emergency/Trauma Center to the Cardiac Cath Lab.

The Heart Attack Receiving Center accreditation is earned by hospitals that meet or exceed quality of care measures for people experiencing the most severe type of heart attack – a STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction). A STEMI involves the complete blockage of blood flow to a portion of the heart.

The purpose of the accreditation program is to significantly reduce cardiac death in patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to early symptoms of a heart attack, reduce the time it takes to receive life-saving treatment and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment administered.

The Chest Pain Center with PCI recertification means that Wheeling Hospital demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing an onsite review by a team of Society of Chest Pain Centers accreditation review specialists. With the increase in chest pain centers came the need to establish standards designed to improve the consistency and quality of care provided to patients. SCPC’s accreditation process ensures that centers meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in acute cardiac medicine.

For many heart attack and congestive heart failure patients, cardiac rehabilitation is a major step toward full recovery. Wheeling Hospital's Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, begun in 1978, is the longest running such program in the State of West Virginia. Currently, the program serves nearly 50 patients daily.
