Julian E. Bailes, MD Julian E. Bailes, MD - Department Chairman
Dr. Julian Bailes is a nationally renowned specialist in cerebrovascular surgery, sports injuries, and telemedicine. He conducted a study on head injuries in football players for the National Football League Players Association and is frequently consulted for his expertise in this area. He also served as chief of cerebrovascular surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1988-1997. Dr. Bailes received his medical degree from Louisiana State University and completed advanced training at Northwestern University Medical Center in Chicago and the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

Warren W. Boling Jr., MD Warren W. Boling Jr., MD
A specialist in the surgical treatment of epilepsy, Dr. Warren Boling received his medical degree from Texas Tech University and completed advanced training at the University of Kentucky, and at McGill University in Canada and the University of Melbourne in Australia. He came to WVU from the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute, a world-renowned center for the surgical treatment of epilepsy.

Larry V. Carson, MD Larry V. Carson, MD
Dr. Larry V. Carson is trained and board certified in both neurosurgery and in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He specializes in complex spine and craniofacial surgery. Dr. Carson earned his medical degree and completed advanced training at the Medical College of Georgia-Augusta. He was a recipient of the prestigious Van Wagenen Fellowship for advanced training in craniofacial, skull base, and reconstructive surgery in Paris, France.

John J. Collins, MD John J. Collins, MD
Dr. John J. Collins is an expert in the neurosurgical care of children and adolescents. Prior to joining WVU, he was chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Lorna Linda University, and chief of neurosurgery at two major U.S. Navy hospitals. His specialties include skull-base techniques, spinal instrumentation, and the surgical application of advanced digital imaging technologies.

Ronald W. Hargraves, MD Ronald W. Hargraves, MD
Dr. Ronald W. Hargraves is trained and board certified in neurosurgery, with a fellowship in neurovascular surgery. He previously was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital and also consulted at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Hargraves was a pilot with the U.S. Marine Corp and a physician with the U.S. Navy. He received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He served his residency in neurosurgery at the National Naval Medical Center, and completed his fellowship in neurovascular surgery at the Barrows Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Prior to joining WVU, he was in private practice at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, NY.

Terrence D. Julien, MD Terrence D. Julien, MD
Dr. Terrence D. Julien is a neuro-oncologist, a neurosurgeon who diagnosis and treats patients who have tumors of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. He works with a multi-disciplinary team of experts in the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and other specialists at WVU to provide top-quality neuro-oncological care. Dr. Julien earned his medical degree from Howard University. He was fellowship-trained in neurosurgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and in neurosurgical oncology at the University of South Florida's H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. He completed specialty training at the New York University Medical Center and at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.

Bengt Karlsson, MD, PhD Bengt Karlsson, MD, PhD
Dr. Bengt Karlsson is an internationally renowned specialist in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. Dr. Karlsson, of Sweden, has over 16 years experience with the instrument and has worked on more than 2,000 cases. He served as head of the Gamma Knife Center at Goethe University Frankfurt in Frankfurt, Germany, before coming to WVU. His Gamma Knife training began in 1987 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he served as co-director of the Gamma Knife Center. Dr. Karlsson has been extensively published and is a visiting consultant at hospitals and institutions in the U.S., Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Korea, Taiwan, and Germany.

Charles L. Rosen, MD, PhD Charles L. Rosen, MD, PhD - Director of Research
Dr. Charles L. Rosen, director of the department's research program, also has expertise in skull- base surgery, spinal cord tumors, pediatric neurosurgery, and complex spine surgery. His research centers on new ways to improve stroke outcomes and to diagnose and treat brain tumors and injuries. Dr. Rosen received his medical degree and PhD from New York University and advanced training at George Washington University.

Joseph L. Voelker, MD Joseph L. Voelker, MD
Dr. Joseph L. Voelker has experience in a wide range of neurosurgical disorders and procedures, specializing in the neurosurgical treatment of aneurysms and AVMs, pituitary tumors and acoustic neurinoma. He received his medical degree from Indiana University and completed advanced training at Indiana University and the University of Western Ontario.
