High-Risk Pregnancy Specialist
Wheeling Hospital now has on staff the area’s only perinatologist, specially trained
to assess and handle high-risk pregnancies.
Dr. Ronald Thomas, an obstetrician-gynecologist with subspecialty training in maternal-fetal
medicine, specializes in treating women with pregnancy complications. These may
include maternal issues, such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease, or fetal
complications including growth restriction or structural abnormalities. Multiples,
such as twins and triplets, also can lead to complications for both the mother and
babies.
Working with Thomas is a team of genetic counselors and sonographers with special
training in obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound. Together they provide also provide
counseling, screening tests and interpretation for both younger and older mothers.
Many of the patients seen have current and potential risks for gestational diabetes
and gestational hypertension (pre-eclampsia). Often, the risks are based on a worrisome
history, such as prior preterm birth.
Thomas is board certified by the American Board of Ob/Gyn, Division of Maternal
Fetal Medicine.
