World T’ai Chi and Qigong Day to be Celebrated At Howard Long Wellness Center

April 17, 2017

WHEELING– Area residents are invited to participate in World T’ai Chi and Qigong Day on April 29 at Wheeling Hospital’s Howard Long Wellness Center (HLWC).

Local certified Tai Chi instructors Steve Perdok, Nancy Shutler and Donna Melchiori, and assistant instructors Karen LeMasters and Russel DeGarmo will lead this event hands-on workshop.

Participants do not have to be members of HLWC to join in the free activities, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Around the world, tens of thousands of people in 80 countries and 6 continents will take part in the health and healing event as part of World T'ai Chi and Qigong day 2017, which is designed to provide a better understanding of the exercises.

T’ai chi, or “meditation is motion,” is a Chinese form of exercise that dates back thousands of years. Practicing the postures and theories in slow, graceful moving forms or routines have been documented to produce great health benefits. Physical improvements have been noted through muscle relaxation, lower blood pressure, strengthened respiratory system, improved bone density, stronger leg muscles and better balance.

Memorization of the t’ai chi movements also stimulates the mind.

“T’ai chi helps us to let go of all the nervous tension that bogs down our mental computer system. It’s like a general tune up every day,” said Perdok. “Whether you are stressed, continually exhausted, treating a health problem or just wanting to get in shape and feel young again, t'ai chi can help.”

Qigong has similar benefits to t’ai chi, but is more of a stationary breathing, relaxation exercise.

Perdok said participants should wear loose clothing and soft shoes. All ages can participate, or simply watch the demonstrations.
