December 22, 2017

WHEELING, W.Va. – One member of Wheeling Hospital’s Board of Directors is marking his 40th year of public service, having served as teacher, coach, school principal, track and field referee, and as a member of multiple boards and agencies.

But Gary Hill, of St. Clairsville, doesn’t plan on slowing down soon. This great-grandfather continues contributing with enthusiasm and a dedication to improving the quality of life for his community
.
Currently, Hill serves on the boards of three hospitals: Wheeling Hospital and its affiliates Belmont Community Hospital and Harrison Community Hospital. On the Wheeling Hospital board since 1994, he is a member of the Finance and Audit committees, and former member of the By-Laws and Building and Grounds committees.

“There is nothing more satisfying than working with good people for good reasons,” Hill said. “And I also have had the backing of my family: my wife, Charlotte, and my son Bunker and Zach. Remember, a team can accomplish more than an individual.”

Hill also had a long and distinguished career in education and high school sports. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University Hill began teaching at Fairpoint Elementary School in 1962. He then moved to Martins Ferry High School where he taught biology, health and physical education until 1969. He also coached basketball, football, and track and field. While there, he earned a master’s degree from West Virginia University.

He then went to work for the Department of Interior in Guam from 1969-72, and obtained a master’s degree in guidance/counseling/psychology at the University of Guam.

In 1972, Hill returned to Belmont County and the St. Clairsville City School District, where he began as a guidance counselor. Later he served as middle school and high school principal, retiring in 1994.

But Hill didn’t stay retired for long. In 1999, he took up the reins of principal at St. John Central High School and held that post until his second “retirement” in 2007.

Hill has devoted many years to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). He served as a state track and field meet referee from 1983-90 and was appointed to the OHSAA Eastern District Board and the OHSAA Board of Control, where he was president from 1991-92. He also has received the OHSAA Track and Field Meritorious Award and is in the association’s Officials Hall of Fame.

A graduate of Bellaire High School, Hill has received the school’s Alumni Achievement Award and, in 2004, was named Alumni of the Year.

Hill is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Finance Committee; the Knights of Columbus; the F&AM Weyer Masonic Lodge; the Scottish Rite; the Osiris Shrine; the Ohio Retired Teachers Association; the Stone Chimney Club; and the Belmont Hills Country Club.

He and his wife, Charlotte, a retired teacher, have two sons, three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
