Dr. Howard Shackelford Joins Wheeling Hospital

WHEELING – One of the area’s most respected surgeons, Dr. Howard Shackelford, has joined the staff at Wheeling Hospital. And due to his experience and expertise in numerous surgical procedures, Shackelford has been named chair of the hospital’s Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery services.
Shackelford, a Wheeling native, has been performing surgery in the area for more than 30 years. He will maintain his offices at 46150 National Road West in St. Clairsville, and 2201 Chapline St., Wheeling. He earned a bachelor’s degree at West Liberty State College (WLSC), and received his medical degree at West Virginia University. His thoracic and cardiovascular surgery residency was performed at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
His experience includes:
• General surgery.
• Thoracic surgery.
• Cardiovascular surgery.
• Breast surgery.
• Trauma surgery.
In addition to his medical practice, Shackelford is medical director of the Department of Physician Assistant Sciences at West Liberty University (WLU). He also is vice president of Research and Development at S&S Surgical Corp., Wheeling, where he developed and patented the Shackelford Scalpel.
Shackelford is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Angiology. Among his memberships are the American College of Surgeons; the Society of Thoracic Surgeons; the Society of Critical Care Medicine; the American Society of Angiology; the American Society of Breast Surgeons; and the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety. He also is a member of the City of Hope Clinical Cancer Genetics Community.
A member of the WLU Foundation board, Shackelford also was named to the WLSC Wall of Honor in 2001.
