Wheeling Hospital Now Using Enhanced Method to Better Detect Breast Cancer

WHEELING – New technology in use at Wheeling Hospital has the potential to save additional lives through more accurate mammograms for earlier detection of breast cancer.
Wheeling Hospital is the only medical facility in Ohio, Belmont, Marshall, Harrison, Wetzel and Tyler counties utilizing three-dimensional (3D) mammography, a more advanced method to detect breast cancer, especially in women with dense breast tissue. The technology was discuss today during a news conference.
The hospital is using the Genius 3D Mammography Exam by Hologic, a medical technology company primarily focusing on improving women’s health.
“Conventional two-dimensional mammograms limit the exam because overlapping breast tissue can sometimes produce unclear results, false alarms or, worse, cancer being missed. With Genius 3D exams, we can now evaluate tissue layer by layer for greater accuracy in breast cancer detection,” said Jen Bond, hospital radiology director.
“It’s just another step in our efforts to create the most comprehensive women’s health center in the region.”
Bond explained research shows there are two key advantages of 3D exams compared to 2D exam:
• It finds 20 to 65 percent more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone, an average increase of 41 percent.
• It reduces the need to call the patient back for additional screenings by up to 40 percent.
Any woman who is due to have a conventional mammogram can choose the 3D exam, which is covered by Medicare and most private insurers.
“3D revolutionizes how breast cancer is detected. It provides a better option for women across a variety of ages and breast densities compared to 2D mammography alone. Breast density is a major issue when determining cancers,” noted Dr. Mark Benson, medical director of the hospital’s Radiology Department. “Early detection is paramount. The faster and more accurate the diagnosis, the quicker a treatment plan can be developed.”
Dense breast tissue is the comparison of tissue on a mammogram, dense tissue having more glandular and fibrous tissue compared to fatty tissue.
Radiologist Dr. Carl Seynnaeve said, “When using conventional 2D mammography, lesions can be obscured by dense tissue, making it more difficult to detect cancers. A 3D exam improves the chance of finding cancer in most breasts. Nearly half of all women over age 40 have dense breasts and the Genius 3D is the only mammogram FDA approved as superior for such women.”
For many women, compression during mammograms can be uncomfortable. A 2017 Kadence International study showed 60 percent of women experienced discomfort and half were in pain during their last mammogram.
Genius 3D was designed to provide better, earlier breast cancer detection while keeping the time under compression as short as possible. Genius 3D offers the fastest available scan time, limiting the time under compression to less than four seconds.
