Wheeling Hospital Starts Support Group for Stroke Survivors
April 15, 2019
WHEELING – A new support group for survivors of stroke will be held at Wheeling Hospital beginning April 18. Set for the third Thursday of every month, the group will meet from 6-7:30 p.m. in Conference Room.
Anyone who has experienced a stroke is invited, along with family, friends or support people. Leading the group will be Lucas Burkhardt, coordinator of Wheeling Hospital’s Stroke Center.
“I believe that this group will be a significant piece to both the acute and future recovery of the individuals and family members of individuals having experienced a stroke,” Burkhardt said. “Optimal recovery is achieved through several avenues. Along with medication compliance and physician follow-up; lifestyle changes, social support and mental health are vital components to the ongoing recovery process.”
Some of the topics Burkhardt plans to discuss are:
• Dietary education/recommendations.
• Medication education/compliance.
• Understanding risk factors and signs/symptoms of stroke.
• Depression and other mental health concerns associated with stroke.
• Rehabilitation and provider follow-up.
He plans to have occasional guest speakers, and will also provide time for individuals to bring up any personal issues or concerns they would like to discuss or seek support with.
“This support group will aid in the development of optimal education, support systems and resources to assist stroke patients and their families in achieving the best possible recovery,” Burkhardt said.
While pre-registration is not required for the sessions, Burkhardt asks that those interested in attending let him know beforehand so he can prepare accordingly. Call 304-243-8398.
