WHEELING – Wheeling Hospital will host its 23rd annual Cancer Survivors Day picnic – A Celebration of Life – at Wheeling Park’s Sonneborn Shelter on June 2.
The free event is part of the National Cancer Survivors Day, which has been observed by more than 700 communities throughout the U.S., Canada and other countries for 31 years. National Cancer Survivors Day is a recognition for those who have survived, support for those recently diagnosed, and an outreach to the community.
The local activities will include fellowship, fun and food. The event, scheduled from noon-3 p.m., will feature a picnic-style lunch as well as bingo and door prizes. Cancer patients and survivors will be honored for their strength and courage. The contributions of their families, friends and health care providers also will be recognized.
This event gives the staff of Wheeling Hospital’s Schiffler Cancer Center the opportunity to get reacquainted with former patients and show support for all cancer survivors. It also salutes advances in medical science that so greatly increase the odds of surviving cancer.
Each attendee may bring two guests, and reservations are required. No alcohol or pets are permitted at the event. To register, call Wheeling Hospital’s Community Education and Outreach Department, 304-243-3339 by May 29.
Nationwide, the celebration is coordinated by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, which provides free guidance, support and networking for the event. Its primary mission is to educate the public on cancer and to improve the quality of life among cancer survivors.
