Wheeling Hospital Named Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
February 28, 2020
WHEELING — Wheeling Hospital recently was named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The prestigious BICOE designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR’s breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules. These include mammography, which is a required accreditation; and stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and breast MRI, all voluntary accreditations.
“This couldn’t have been achieved without the hard work of the mammographers, breast sonographers, radiologists, MRI technologists and Supervisor Judy Silverio, who are dedicated to providing quality imaging and care to our patients every day,” said Wheeling Hospital CEO Douglass Harrison.
The review process involves a three-step approach. Facilities undergo a rigorous evaluation to determine if they meet nationally accepted standards of care. Personnel are screened to assure they are well-qualified to perform imaging procedures and interpret medical images. Additionally, equipment is assessed by medical imaging experts who verify that it functions properly, takes optimal images and utilizes appropriate radiation dose levels.
“Our entire team is proud to receive this recognition. It shows our dedication to providing the highest quality of comprehensive breast imaging in our area,” said Chief Radiologist Dr. Mark Benson.
Screening mammography also is available at the St. Clairsville Health Center and Harrison Community Hospital.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
