Dr. Merrick Selected by Peers for Prestigious Best Doctors Database
March 27, 2020
WHEELING, WV — Urologic oncologist Dr. Gregory S. Merrick, medical director at the Schiffler Cancer Center of Wheeling Hospital, has again been selected for inclusion in the Best Doctors in America 2019-2020 database. Merrick has been listed in the database since 1996.
A peer-review survey by thousands of physicians determines by consensus who will be included in the database.
The Best Doctors database exists to help its clients link to a unique combination of medical experience, skill and insight that can help them manage their medical problems.
”I am honored to be included in the Best Doctors in America,” Merrick said. “This is a result of the hard, focused, dedicated work of our team at Wheeling Hospital but especially the Schiffler Cancer Center.”
Best Doctors, based in Massachusetts, is the trusted expert medical resource that helps people take control of their health care. By connecting members and their treating physicians with the best 5% of doctors in 45 specialty and over 400 subspecialty areas, Best Doctors has a dramatic impact on the quality and cost of top-tier health care.
Under Merrick, the Schiffler Cancer Center already is internationally recognized for its cancer care, having treated patients from 17 countries. Domestically, it has treated patients from 45 states.
Merrick, who also is director of Wheeling Hospital’s Men’s Health Center and the Urologic Research Institute, is an internationally recognized uro-oncology expert. His clinical practice and research focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, quality of life and impact of exercise in prostate cancer patients. He is the past chairman of the multi-disciplinary American College of Radiology Prostate Cancer Appropriateness Committee and past president and chairman of the board of the American Brachytherapy Society. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Radiology and the American Brachytherapy Society. In June 2019 he received the Henschke Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the American Brachytherapy Society for his prostate cancer research.
Merrick also has developed innovative prostate biopsy techniques that have resulted in improved prostate cancer diagnostic accuracy. These biopsy techniques have impacted patient selection criteria for active surveillance. For patients with documented slow growing cancer, treatment is no longer necessary.
Last year, Merrick was announced as the Chambers YMCA Light of the Valley Honoree and was presented with the Dr. Lee Jones Patron of Youth Award. YMCA officials said Merrick was an obvious choice for the YMCA Light of the Valley award for his work with youth and for bringing a better awareness of men’s health in the Ohio Valley.
