WHEELING — Dr. Joseph Colella, an internationally recognized robotic and bariatric surgeon, has joined the staff at Wheeling Hospital.

One of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the country, Colella has been performing bariatric surgery since 1999 and created one of the first centers of excellence in bariatric surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in 2004. After leaving AGH, Colella was the director of robotic surgery at two hospitals in the UPMC health system, where he also held the title of assistant professor of surgery.

Also while at UPMC, he performed the first total robotic gastric bypass in Pennsylvania.

He has published numerous peer reviewed articles on a wide range of topics in surgery, including bariatric surgery. His book, “The Appetite Solution,” was published in 2015.

Colella was a founding member of the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association, an international association of the world’s premier robotic surgeons.

“I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to join the team at Wheeling Hospital, where my patients will have access to the state-of-the-art robotic technology offered here. The administrative commitment to excellent bariatric care is strong and well resourced, and I look forward to delivering on our mutual goals.”

Douglass Harrison, Wheeling Hospital CEO, said, “I am personally pleased to be working with Dr. Colella again and look forward to building a comprehensive bariatric program at Wheeling Hospital. Given the propensity of diabetes and obesity in our state, I know Dr Colella and this service will be well received.”
Colella earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His residency and internship were served at Allegheny General Hospital, where he was chief resident in 1990-91. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

No referrals are needed to make appointments with Colella, who is located in Wheeling Hospital’s Tower 1, Suite 101. Call 304-243-6530.
