Wheeling Hospital Among Top in State For Patient Safety in COPD, Neurological Care

WHEELING, WV – Wheeling Hospital has been recognized as in the top 10% in the nation and No. 1 in the state for Patient Safety in treating COPD and providing neurological care. The 2020 awards are from CareChex, an independent health care rating service, and are based on its comprehensive quality scoring system that compares inpatient quality performance across general, acute and non-federal U.S. hospitals.

CareChex also ranked the hospital as No. 1 in its market in Medical Excellence for COPD, hip fracture and trauma care.

The hospital also was ranked in the top 10% in West Virginia for Patient Safety in:
• Hip fracture care.
• Stroke care.
• Neurological care.

In addition, Wheeling Hospital was ranking No. 1 in its market in Patient Safety in:
• COPD.
• Hip fracture care.
• Neurological care.
• Orthopedic care
• Pneumonia care.
• Stroke care.
• Trauma care.

CareChex specializes in rating the quality of hospital and physician care. It provides a comprehensive evaluation of inpatient hospital quality performance using a variety of outcomes of care measures. The CareChex Awards by Quantros uses a peer-reviewed risk-adjustment methodology to more reliably measure rates of mortality, complications and readmissions, appropriately weighting and accounting for all of the risk factors relating to a patient’s principal and secondary diagnosis, as well as other patient characteristics that may increase the probability for adverse clinical outcomes. The rankings do not include any self-reported data.

Awards are presented in 39 clinical categories of care in Medical Excellence and Patient Safety.
