Wheeling Hospital is the only area laboratory to offer computerized imaging of PAP smears. All PAP smears are first read by a computer imager that locates certain types of cells that may be significant. This is followed with a visual screening by a cytotechnologist to confirm the significance of the cell types. This combination of human and computer reading allows the review of thousands of cells that were not humanly possible before and greatly improves the reading accuracy. Combined with the thin layer technology that was introduced at the hospital several years ago and the fact that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can now be ordered by the physician from the same specimen, the earliest stages of cervical cancer can now be identified. This great improvement in technology is only of benefit to those who have their annual PAP smear.
