Specimen Collection Services
6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
7 a.m. to noon, Saturday
After registering in the Outpatient Registration Department located near the outpatient entrance, patients go to the laboratory where the tests are ordered and the specimens will be collected as quickly as possible. In most cases, the entire process should be less than 15-30 minutes. All routine blood draws are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
If a doctor gives the specimen to the patient for delivery to the lab, the patient must register in the Outpatient Department before delivering the specimen. Physicians may also collect specimens in their offices and submit then directly to the laboratory with patients' insurance information. In this situation, patients will not have to go to the laboratory.
A few specimens, such as 24-hour urine specimens, are collected by the patient at home. Instructions are provided by the laboratory. Patients have to register in the Outpatient Department before dropping off the specimens.
After hours and Sunday collections can be accommodated through registration in the Emergency Department. However, there may be delays at these times since the available staff may be dealing with emergency or urgent procedures.
As a convenience to patients, additional specimen collection facilities are available at the Wheeling Clinic Laboratory, Wellsburg Medical Offices, Belmont Community Hospital, Belmont Community Health Center, St. Clairsville Health Center and Powhatan Health Center.
