Before and After Concussion
There is a way to help better diagnose concussions and it’s free. It’s Baseline Testing. Just before or during the early stages of practice, athletes can take a computer test to determine their cognitive abilities. If a head injury occurs, data from the Baseline Testing can be compared to post-injury test results. The combination of the physician evaluation, the cognitive test results and other testing are used in determining a care plan and when to return to participation in the sport.
Our ImPACT program monitors the status and recovery of anyone suffering a concussive-type head injury. It is the same program used by the NFL and the NHL, as well as many colleges and high schools nationwide. ImPACT, or Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing, is a computer software program that analyzes the cognitive functions of the brain following concussion. Done in conjunction with the physician evaluation, objective data is obtained to assess memory, sequencing, reaction time and visual motor speed.
