Skilled Nursing Care
Registered nurses (RNs) perform procedures normally done in the hospital, such as complicated wound changes, catheter care, IV therapy, enterostomal care and psychiatric nursing. The RNs will teach you about your illness and medications. In addition, the RNs will provide you and a family member/caregiver the skills necessary to perform simple dressing changes, colostomy care, wound care, IV administration, self-administered injections and tube feedings.
Physical therapists administer specific exercises to help your rehabilitation for conditions involving stroke, arthritis, joint replacement, neuromuscular diseases and amputation. They can also help with exercises following a debilitating disease or prolonged hospital stay.
Speech therapists evaluate speech and language difficulties, and provide therapy for stroke, head injury, swallowing difficulties and laryngectomy recovery.
Occupational therapists evaluate levels of function and implement programs to assist your return to an independent lifestyle, focusing on activities of daily living.
Medical social workers will counsel you and your family on social and emotional problems that may arise do to your medical condition. They also will discuss appropriate community resources and help with referrals to outside assistance agencies.
Home health aide services
Home health aides assist with personal care and the basic daily routine of bathing, shampooing, shaving, dressing and ambulation.
Our staff will help you determine the extent of your insurance coverage. Services covered by insurance will be billed directly to your insurance company. The cost of services may be covered totally or in part by Medicare, Medicaid or other plans.
To obtain services of Visiting Nurses, you must:
- be under a physician's care.
- be referred by a physician.
- have a face-to-face visit with your physician if you have Medicare, Ohio Medicaid or certain commercial insurances.
- be homebound.
- require the skills of an RN, physical therapist or speech therapist.
- require only intermittent care. Medicare and health insurance do not cover 24-hour care/supervision.
- live within the service area.

With one phone call from your physician's office, you can begin receiving premier care in the comfort of your own home. Visiting Nurse Services of Wheeling Hospital and Visiting Nurse Services of Wheeling Hospital-Belmont make visits from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and an RN is on-call after-hours for emergencies.
